This CD is the first in a series of three albums which Receiver Records will be releasing. Note the different musical arrangements and lyrical variations of tracks which eventually made it onto classic Fall albums, "Extricate" and "Shiftwork". This first album includes new Fall material such as the Jeff Lynne penned "Birthday" featuring Lucy Rimmer on vocals, and the highly evocative instrumental track "The Knight, The Devil And Death" which not only shows The Fall as innovative composers, but highlights their undisputed individuality as musicians. In Contrast to the punchy versions of "Couldn't Get Ahead", "Blood Outta Stone" and the intriguing "Dr. Faustus", "Arid Al's Dream" provides a mid tempo slice of surrealism with Mark E. Smith's imaginitive lyrics floating over a deliriously intense backing track peppered with evocative violin lines and sinister percussion. "Wings" shows The Fall in excellent form, reminding us how they come alive when on stage with Mark E. Smith's highly effective and at times theatrical spoken word contrasting perfectly Brix Smith's haunting vocal approach. All in all this CD is a catalogue of music which shows that The Fall are consistantly good at what they do, yet another benchmark that all pretenders must strive to attain. |
