Review by Stewart Mason
The first single from 1990s Extricate, "Popcorn Double Feature" shows that the Fall actually suffered relatively little from the departure of singer/guitarist Brix. Though her babydoll voice is missed, the pop sensibility she gave the band during their best era is still in evidence here. The chorus is downright catchy, even though Mark E. Smith sings it with his usual sneering contempt, and the queasy string section (think of Simon Jeffes' arrangement of Sid Vicious' version of "My Way") gives the song a melodic heft. "Arms Control Poseur" mixes a catchy piano part and bass riff with one of Smith's most fragmentary and telegraphic vocals. "Butterflies 4 Brains" is, in its way, downright pretty, with Martin Bramah (temporarily back in the band after having left in the late '70s) bringing a moody pop sense akin to that of his own band, the Blue Orchids. This is one of the Fall's best EPs.
