Co-Pilot is the latest project from Alan Peter Roberts (Jim Noir) and Leonore Wheatley (Soundcarriers / International Teachers of Pop).
The pair first collaborated when Wheatley left her native Nottingham for Manchester, joining the Jim Noir live band on keys and vocals. She went on to front the International Teachers of Pop (ITOP’s) for two critically lauded albums of joyous dancefloor filling bangers – their self-titled debut (2019) and ‘Pop Gossip’ (2020).
Around the same time, Roberts was busy expanding the Jim Noir universe – to similar acclaim. The last Jim Noir LP, ‘AM Jazz’ was awarded the coveted number one spot in ‘Piccadilly Records – End of Year Review’ (2020) and was followed by the ‘Deep View Blue’ E.P. (2021), cementing his status as a master of melodies that bellow and ache.
As with most musicians, lockdown brought gig cancellations and a general loss of momentum to their creative endeavours. Whilst the UK government proselytized about artists retraining as coders or cyber security guards, Roberts and Wheatley chose to navigate new musical terrain, resulting in ‘Revolve’, their nine-track debut.
Whilst there are traces of musical DNA imprinted on these songs, that point to previous flight paths; Co-Pilot is a welcome departure for climes unknown.
New single and album opener, Swim to Sweden, manages to traverse space and time, taking in the Golden Dawn’s ‘Evolution’, nautical accordion breaks, and J Dilla’s sense of woozy quantization. Taken in at breakbeat speed. All the while, Wheatley’s vocals saunter over you like a flight attendant calmly addressing passengers to brace for impact.

Motosaka received the blessing of Haroumi Hosono, Godfather of Japanese Electronica, who assented to being sampled in an original version of the song. After listening to the track, it’s easy to see why – sonic synth squelches and Tom Tom Club funk with a stunning vocal melody at odds with the desolation of Wheatley’s lyrics.
‘I was fighting with myself / and I won.’
I am 1 begins with a soulful declaration of intent and morphs into an epic, impassioned Wrecking Crew outro. Layered with glocks and vox and spacious reverbs swimming through the audio canals, Roberts’ voice is given parity in the mix, evoking a lost timeline where Sonny and Cher front the United States of America.
She walks in beauty leaves space to breathe and inhale the chemtrails. A recurring bassline and rim shot allow room for Wheatley’s chanteuse delivery, occasionally punctuated by a choir of demonic angels on your shoulder.
‘She walks in beauty / beyond the shadows I see / His eyes are closed to follow / his love no longer hollow’
The album closes with Corner House a kaleidoscopic merry -go ride with a timeless melody that implores you to ‘start from the beginning / take all that’s worth giving.’
That was your Co-Pilot speaking. So take heed.
