All Music Guide Review:
Review by Ned Raggett
The initial CD reissue of Fall in a Hole was roundly (and deservedly) criticized for not only being mastered from vinyl, but from a copy that skipped noticeably. Somehow that only seemed appropriate in a way, admittedly, but for a new series of reissues in 2002, that willful up-your-nose perversity (thankfully) gets set aside for a much better, vastly improved collection all around. While it's still mastered from vinyl, the source is barely noticeable and in fact the album benefits from a full 24-bit treatment for the audiophiles, and thankfully sounds like it. The core performance itself is still as brilliant and fierce as it was on the original release, but for this new version some honest-to-goodness extras turn up. Songwise there are six extra cuts included after the encore, taken from three further shows on that particular New Zealand tour. There aren't any duplicates of the Auckland set list, and ripping takes of "The Container Drivers" and "Who Makes the Nazis" are welcome choices. Meanwhile, the liner notes are a complete and much improved treat and include commentary from Fall archivist Conway Paton, a couple of interview transcripts, and some show reviews. There's a hilarious reminiscence from New Zealand music legend Chris Knox, who recorded and helped release the original album. Among the other revelations, Knox forgot to send Mark E. Smith copies of the album when it appeared, and the first time the singer heard about it was when he saw a heavily overpriced import copy in the U.K.. The fans will definitely be most the most pleased by all this, but Fall in a Hole is just as easily a great starting point for newcomers as it is for old-timers, as it showcases a key era of the band and sees them finally receiving their dues with a full, live set.
Mark Prindle Review:
Fall In A Hole - Flying Nun 1983.
8 out of 10
Another live album. Good song selection, including the ten-minute "Backdrop," which was never recorded for a studio release. As much as I dislike the idea of live albums, I can't deny that these are all great songs (except "Marquis Cha-Cha," which I've never been terribly fond of). But don't even waste your time trying to find it, unless you live in New Zealand. Perish the thought. Jeez, talk about a HELLHOLE!!!!
